Neighbourhood Watch - What is it?

Neighbourhood Watch, sometimes known as Home Watch, is nationwide and one of the most successful crime prevention initiatives ever. The idea behind Neighbourhood Watch (NW) schemes is that neighbours come together to build community safety awareness and promote neighbourliness. They are led by volunteer coordinators who work with their neighbours and the local PCSO and police officers to address any local crime issues and undertake crime prevention activities. Coordinators receive information from the police to pass on to neighbours and encourage their neighbours to pass information about anything suspicious to police. Schemes can be large, covering for example, most of the households on an estate, or they might involve just half a dozen houses. Amongst the advantages of joining established NW schemes are that they are proven to reduce local crime such as burglary, vandalism, car thefts and thefts from cars. Better community spirit is also fostered, and crime prevention advice can be efficiently and quickly circulated throughout a community.

How do I get involved?

To find out if there is already a NW scheme in your area, go to www.ourwatch.org.uk and enter your postcode. If there is a scheme that already covers where you live you can ask to join it and the coordinator for the scheme will be in touch with you.

If there isn’t a scheme nearby, you can consider setting one up. You can do this through the "ourwatch" website by clicking to create a scheme. Alternatively, send an email to the mailbox for the Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association was constituted in 2016 to promote and support NW schemes across Cheshire, and they work in partnership with Cheshire Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner. Assistance is available to residents wishing to join a scheme, to coordinators wishing to re-invigorate their existing scheme, and for those wishing to start new NW schemes. The volunteer team at CNWA can update details on the NW database, provide general advice and support, and send out Coordinator Packs containing all of the materials needed to get started, including leaflets and stickers. They can be contacted using the mailbox: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Our News - 5 October 2026

One thing many people don't realise about Neighbourhood Watch is that we are a charity, (charity number 1173349, in fact!) and we're quite a small one too. It’s a team of just twelve people who support a network of brilliant volunteers across the country.

As a volunteer-led organisation, we achieve a huge amount with limited resources. Our fantastic Neighbourhood Watch members make a difference in communities every day. We've just published our latest Impact Report so you can see how we've been creating better and safer neighbourhoods over the last 12 months. As well as our Impact Report, highlights this month include:

  • Local updates from Southwater and Staffordshire
  • Don’t let scammers take advantage of the Virgin email changes
  • Hate Crime Awareness week, 10-17 October

Our latest impact report

2025-26 was a landmark year for us, marked by inspiring community action across England and Wales. Members helped shape our new five-year strategy, centred on Neighbourhood Watch, Connect and Act. We are immensely proud of and grateful to our incredible network for the difference our voluntneers make. Read the full impact report here.

Hate Crime Awareness Week

Anyone can be a victim of hate crime. It can have a massive impact not only on the person who was targeted but also their family, friends and community. Hate Crime Awareness Week 2026 takes place from 10-17 October. It’s organised by the charity 17-24-30 NationalHCAW. The aim is to encourage people to recognise and to report hate crimes. Opinion: Don’t let scammers take advantage of the Virgin email changes
The announcement from Virgin Media that it is changing how email accounts are managed might cause concern, particularly for people worried about online scams. Sandra Bauer, Deputy Chief Executive of Neighbourhood Watch, shares advice in her latest blog.

Remember, scammers like to rush people, so give yourself five minutes. Stop and think before sharing information. Challenge unexpected requests, even if they appear genuine, and contact your bank to report concerns. Read the blog here.

Sussex police celebrate 30 years of outstanding voluntary community service in Southwater

When a police house was due for closure in September 1996, Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator Karen Haynes stepped in to set up a Community Police Office in the area, staffed by dedicated volunteers. At a time when Peter Andre and the Spice Girls topped the charts (a golden era in music!), these volunteers stepped forward. They are now marking their 30th anniversary as a vital connection between police and the community. Read more online here.

Staffordshire Watch

Staffordshire Watch supports Neighbourhood Watch across all 10 Local Policing Areas in the county. Over the last couple of months, they’ve been busy building connections at a host of community events and talking to neighbourhood policing teams. They are a truly indefatigable and inspiring team of volunteers.  If you are based in Staffordshire, make sure you follow their Facebook page here for all their latest updates.
