Plans are afoot to create a new green space in Sandiway.
The Thomas family from Toolerstone House on Norley Road are working in conjunction with Mersey Forest to form Five Trees Wood, a private woodland project.
Speaking on the project’s Facebook page, Jake Thomas said the aim is to create a sustainable, green space for the community which will offset carbon footprints, enhance biodiversity, and encourage wildlife. The site is on an adjoining field to Toolerstone, previously bought by Jake’s mother Camilla to prevent building and development on the land.
The family is aiming to hold planting days with the community and will be working with schools to get the woodland project off the ground.
As work on the allotments was winding down a little for the winter season, Storm Darragh decided to wield his tempestuous power over the land which resulted in some damage to the plots.
There was also snow and ice in November, great for an early Christmas vibe, but maybe not so good for anything with roots.
So, how did the allotments fare under these meteorological assaults?
Here’s our Man with the Watering Can, Tony Eakins:
‘As the site is quite open, the plots do suffer from strong winds, and this was the case with Storm Darragh. Three greenhouses will need to be dismantled because of damage caused by the storm. Also, one of the sheds had its roof lifted off but that can just be refitted. Despite being vulnerable to winter storms because of its open location, there is an upside to this position in that we have awesome views!’
Storms aside, what else have the plot holders been up to since we last checked in?
Tony again:
‘All the hard work that we put in during the spring and summer came to fruition with really good harvests during the autumn months. The time is now upon us all to crack on and tidy up our plots and greenhouses so that we are ready to burst back into action for our spring planting.
‘I know a few of us have also taken advantage of having a greenhouse by planting some salad crops. The ones I planted are doing very well so I should be harvesting some of those to use during the Christmas festivities.’
There’s also a community spirit among some of the plot holders, in terms of helping the village bloom with colour. Tony explains:
‘As some of us are involved with the village planters we have also used the space available in our greenhouses to overwinter some plants that we can then reuse and share in a number of the planters next spring.’
Although harvest time is more-or-less over on the allotments now, work doesn’t stop. Tony says the winter months will still be quite busy:
‘There are plenty of jobs that we need to get on with over the next three months. The biggest one is to do with manure. Whether we are directly planting in the ground or planting in raised beds we will need to replenish all the nutrients that were used up from raising our crops, and good manure helps us to do that.
‘Many of us have also started off several plants, mainly onions, that can be planted in the late autumn. I’m happy that the onions are growing strongly, so I’m looking forward to a good early crop next year.’
Keeping fruit and vegetables healthy is an important part of maintaining a plot, but it can sometimes be a battle. This year has seen some ‘tater’ trouble.
‘A major task for all of us over the next few months will be to work out our planting rotation to ensure we not only get a good harvest of the crops we grow, but that we also keep plant diseases to a minimum.
‘I’ve tried again to grow some potatoes that would be ready for Christmas but again I’ve fallen foul of the dreaded potato blight, which is an airborne disease that attacks the foliage and rots the spuds. I’ll have to think about this for next year to see if there’s anything I can do to rid myself of this problem.’
Tony says he and his fellow plot holders will be keeping things ticking along and looking forward to seeing the first shoots of their labours issue forth at the turn of the next season.
‘As you can see although it is a less hectic time now, there are still a number of tasks that we need to get done so we are ready to burst into life in the spring.’

You should find that your Garden Waste (Green Bin) - if you have one - collections have now been completed for 2024. They will restart after 24 February should you choose to pay the extra Council Tax for their collection - "The online subscription service will be open on Monday 6 January 2025". "Garden waste collection is an opt-in chargeable service costing £52.50 per bin per calendar year (an increase of £2.50 on last year) regardless of when you subscribe during the year. This charge is not included or added to your council tax bill. Residents have a choice to use the service or make alternative arrangements such as composting at home or taking their waste to the nearest recycling centre.
If you are in receipt of full council tax reduction at the point of applying for your annual permit, you are entitled to a £10 reduction on the cost of one garden waste bin permit.
The service will provide fortnightly collections over 40 weeks of the year with a suspension outside of growing season of 12 weeks (December to February). Garden waste bins will not be emptied without a valid subscription and displayed permit. Collections in 2025 will take place between Monday 24 February 2025 and Friday 28 November 2025."

Steve Chivers reports: "We had 40 young people at the Youth Club last Friday, which is great, but we really need more volunteers to make it easier.
The Youth Workers are responsible for running the event so what we need is help running the tuck shop, playing pool, table tennis, basketball etc, the art project, music, computer games or just an extra pair of eyes and ears. There is no commitment to come each week, once or twice a month would be really appreciated.

(Cuddington & Sandiway Youth Club operates every Friday for anyone between the ages of 11 and 17 from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. It is located in the building behind the Scout hut on the Norley Road playing fields.)
You will have noticed that we now have a number of 'planters' around the village with bright, cheerful flower displays in. These are being maintained by volunteers from the village who are forming a ‘Planters Group’ to tend the plants. The aim is to have the planters full, tidy and colourful year round to endeavour to have our lovely village looking its best.
The group is supported by Cllr Gillian Edwards and the Parish Council.
A new planter has been placed on the corner of Norley Road, opposite the Round Tower, and so more help would be appreciated. The new term has started and Squirrels Pre-School, operating from 'The Lodge' next to the Residents’ Clubhouse on Delamere Park, is open for business and welcoming new starters from the whole community, not just Delamere Park.
"Squirrels Pre-School offers places for children from 1.5 – 5 years. All staff are fully qualified, dedicated and sensitive to every child’s needs. Progress is observed by your child's key workers and we provide a rich curriculum to support the independent skills each child needs to thrive. We currently use Famly to share observations and special moments with you and assess the children to support their needs."
St John’s Church has been open each weekday since the beginning of this year and anyone who’s passing is welcome to come in to sit quietly or to have a look around the beautiful building. Recently, visitors have left comments in the visitors’ book, expressing their gratitude on finding the church open. The church is delighted to hear that people have enjoyed the opportunity to spend time at St John’s and would encourage anyone who’s passing to drop in between 10am and 3pm (Monday to Friday) or between 10am and 12pm on Saturdays.
The church was originally scheduled to be closed from 9th to 13th September but the new lighting installation has gone well and the church can now remain open in September.
16 to 20 September – ‘Walking Further Together’ exhibition to showcase the lived experiences of people in West Cheshire who have experienced poverty.

Music Trains:
A full programme of Music Trains for 2024
We will have a full programme of Music Trains from April to October this year. There will be monthly Music Trains from Chester to the Golden Pheasant in Plumley (except in June when we go to the Angel in Knutsford) and three more from Altrincham to Alexander’s in Chester. Plus we hope to have one or two from Altrincham to our new venue – the Goshawk in Mouldsworth. We are arranging a lunchtime Music Train for a group from Chester to the Railway Inn in Mobberley, another lunchtime event for a group from Chester to the Golden Pheasant and an evening Music Train for a group from Altrincham to Alexander’s.

How it works
There is no charge for the Music Trains from Chester to Plumley or Knutsford, though there is a collection on the way back for the band and you will need a train ticket. There is music on the train both ways and at the pub. No need to book from Chester or intermediate stations – just get on the train. There will be signs on the windows to show you the carriage with the music. Music Trains from Chester leave Chester at 18:56 and the return train arrives back in Chester at 22:38. You can also get on or off the train at the intermediate stations along the way. For Music Trains from Altrincham to Chester you need to book in advance.
At the intermediate stations you must buy your ticket from the platform ticket machine or online. At Chester you can buy it from the ticket machine or the ticket office or online. If there isn’t a ticket machine at your station or if the machine isn’t working then you can buy a ticket from the conductor on the train.
It is always possible that train times might change and a small possibility that a Music Train might have to be cancelled at short notice. In that case you would receive an email notification if you are on this mailing list and a note would be put on the Community Rail Partnership website and its social media accounts.

Sandiway Pantomime Group are seeking a Director and a Musical Director for their end-of- January-2025 production of "Hercules - The Pan-Toga" - a brilliant new script by Phil Hosker. Cheshire West and Chester Council’s on-demand rural bus service, which aims to improve connectivity in some of the more remote parts of the borough, is celebrating its first birthday. ‘itravel’ covers a wide area including Cuddington & Sandiway, Helsby, Frodsham, Delamere and Acton Bridge, as well as some other villages, where no commercial services are available (PRESS HERE for the itravel area map).
Since the service began on 31 July 2023 it has clocked up an impressive 11,311 journeys with 15,097 passengers jumping on board. Out of 4,412 customer service ratings given, 98% of users rate the service five out of five.
The bus service can be booked online, using a mobile phone app, or phone call, which allows a resident, or group of residents, to request a bus for a specific journey. The itravel service has an 'introductory' single £2 flat fare - people aged 19 and under can travel half price and children under five years travel for free. Concessionary pass holders travel free after 09:30 Monday to Friday and anytime Saturday and Sunday.

Monday 26 August: During the day trains will run only between Chester and Altrincham, with connecting buses to and from Stockport.

A full programme of Music Trains for 2024
We will have a full programme of Music Trains from April to October this year. There will be monthly Music Trains from Chester to the Golden Pheasant in Plumley (except in June when we go to the Angel in Knutsford) and three more from Altrincham to Alexander’s in Chester. Plus we hope to have one or two from Altrincham to our new venue – the Goshawk in Mouldsworth. We are arranging a lunchtime Music Train for a group from Chester to the Railway Inn in Mobberley, another lunchtime event for a group from Chester to the Golden Pheasant and an evening Music Train for a group from Altrincham to Alexander’s.

How it works
There is no charge for the Music Trains from Chester to Plumley or Knutsford, though there is a collection on the way back for the band and you will need a train ticket. There is music on the train both ways and at the pub. No need to book from Chester or intermediate stations – just get on the train. There will be signs on the windows to show you the carriage with the music. Music Trains from Chester leave Chester at 18:56 and the return train arrives back in Chester at 22:38. You can also get on or off the train at the intermediate stations along the way. For Music Trains from Altrincham to Chester you need to book in advance.
At the intermediate stations you must buy your ticket from the platform ticket machine or online. At Chester you can buy it from the ticket machine or the ticket office or online. If there isn’t a ticket machine at your station or if the machine isn’t working then you can buy a ticket from the conductor on the train.
It is always possible that train times might change and a small possibility that a Music Train might have to be cancelled at short notice. In that case you would receive an email notification if you are on this mailing list and a note would be put on the Community Rail Partnership website and its social media accounts.

Sandiway Miniature Railway (next to Blakemere Village) was the venue for their Charity Gala, held by the Mid Cheshire Society of Model Engineers (MCSME) on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Over £500 was raised for Simply The Breast, which raises funds for Mid Cheshire Hospitals.
The Gala was opened by Kim Smith, of Radio Northwich and Simply The Breast (picture below). Her spirits were not dampened by the rain at the start of the event; as the weekend progressed, the weather improved and a fantastic time really was had by all.
As well as its own locomotives, MCSME welcomed guests with their own engines and even a live steam model of a vintage road roller - surely a first at Sandiway Wood. On the Sunday, as well as the road roller, no fewer than four steam locomotives were in operation, and kept very busy by the crowds of people who came for a ride on the recently extended track.
Huge thanks are due to all who helped to organise the event, all the owners who brought vehicles to run, to Kim Smith and, of course, to everyone who came and had a ride, paid a fare or put a donation in the buckets. This event was undoubtedly even bigger and better than the successful Gala held in 2023, so MCSME is looking forward to hosting another one in 2025.

A Charity Gala will mark the fiftieth birthday of the Mid Cheshire Society of Model Engineers (MCSME) over the weekend of 6/7 July. All proceeds from the event will be given to the local charity Simply The Breast, which raises money for Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity.
Sandiway Miniature Railway, next to Blakemere Village, is home to MCSME, which was founded in 1974, so is now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. In May of that year, an article appeared in the local newspaper, penned by a local builder, appealing for people interested in model engineering to contact him with a view to forming a local society. From small beginnings, MCSME grew and developed; it purchased the site at Sandiway Wood in 2012, the first trains running there a year later.
During the weekend of the Gala, the railway will host visiting locomotives and even a steam roller. If you haven’t visited Sandiway Miniature Railway for a while, you will be astonished at the extent to which it has been enlarged and developed in recent years. You can’t beat the sound, sight and smell of steam and you will, of course, be able to ride around the whole railway, behind one of several live steam locomotives. If you’re feeling adventurous (and you are over 16 years of age) you will also have the opportunity to drive a miniature locomotive for yourself.
All the proceeds from the event are being given to Simply The Breast. This amazing project was set up by Kim Smith to raise funds to enhance the patient experience in the Breast Care Centre at Leighton Hospital, donating money to Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity. You may know Kim from Radio Northwich, where she presents The Good Morning Show from Monday to Friday. She will be opening the Gala at 11:30am on Saturday 6 July, as a parade of locomotives will mark the start of the event.
The dates and times you need are as follows:
Saturday 6 July: official opening and parade of engines at 11:30am; public running from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm; drive a locomotive at various times during the day.
Sunday 7 July: public running from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm; visiting steam roller running all day.
Please remember that all children should be accompanied by an adult on the site and when riding one of our trains. We are only able to accept cash in payment for rides and activities, and donations. Last Wednesday’s Music Train was well-attended, with a full carriage of Music Train followers and some ‘normal’ people who found themselves surrounded by the music of Time Bandits and friends. As well as listening to Time Bandits’ entertaining multi-instrumented five-piece band with singer Katrina Turner, we heard solo work songs from Dave Vaughan and had surprise guest appearances from California. A great evening of music – thanks to all the musicians and to the staff of the Golden Pheasant. Time Bandits and Dave Vaughan are playing on this Music Train from Chester. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the Music Train planned for next Thursday, 25 July, with Hound Dog Blues on the train and Dave Roberts Jazz at Alexander’s. We haven’t received enough bookings to justify opening up Alexander’s and wouldn’t have enough people to get the right atmosphere on the train and at the venue. I am very sorry about this. Anna founded the 'cakes for kids' scheme that makes cakes for children referred by charities & schools and has now provide free cakes to all ages, including a cake for a lady who turned 100 at the village nursing home. Anna is a modest person, who has been an unsung village volunteer for decades, running toddler group at the church, then rainbows for the guides, scouts etc.
A person who has made, and continues to make, this village a better place to live.
After losing her Grandad in 2002, Ellie took part in her first one mile fun run in 2003 and raised £240 for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, which is what her Grandad suffered from. Ellie then got her sister Rosie involved and on the weekend before their Grandad would have turned 75 they held a bake sale, selling their bakes from their drive to friends, neighbours and family.
In May 2024 they took part in the Chester half marathon fun run which they completed without stopping and proudly received their medals. They were delighted to see their fundraising total rise to more than £500. It is still rising.
As reported in our Newsroom in December 2023, Petty Pool have submitted a Planning Application for "site clearance, demolition of existing buildings and the erection of an outdoor education centre, community hub building, new internal access arrangements, car parking, landscaping and associated servicing and boundary treatments". The full project, once approved by CWaC Planning, will take roughly 8 years to complete and will cost in the region of £11 million - the fund raising challenge has begun.

D-Day 80 is the international commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings on the five beaches in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Thursday 6th June 2024 marks 80 years since the invasion by British and American troops landing on the beaches.
The local Royal British Legion and Women’s Section here in Sandiway & Cuddington are marking this date by Laying Wreaths and the act of Remembrance at the village War Memorial on Norley Road at 11.00 am.

The club is now set to grow its artistic offering within the club and beyond.
We have been successful in getting a grant from Cheshire West Voluntary Action, Cuddington and Sandiway Parish Council and Northwich Rotary to start a new mosaic project. The project, called “Putting Us On The Map”, will start off with a challenge, inviting young people from the club and local schools to send in a photo of their favourite village places. The photos will be simplified into drawings and will form the backbone of a mosaic which will take shape in collaboration with the group's local mosaic artist. After many hands making light work, the finished mosaic will find its forever home as a gift to Cuddington Station in 2025.
Youth club chair Stephen Chivers said; “We want this project to give something back to our young people, maybe helping them to find something that they love to do as a hobby or even as a career. Inspiring them to use their creative muscles to relax, do things together and enjoy life.”
Friend of Cuddington Station, Val Godfrey said “We want our station to be an attractive place from which young and old can set off on exciting rail journeys. We have been talking about this project for a while and its great to see it getting off the ground.”

Note: the Village Youth Club meet every Friday evening from 7 - 9pm in the Youth Club building on the Norley Road Playing Fields. Anyone aged 11 to 17 is more than welcome to attend and find out more about this worthwhile project.
Cheshire Highways have given notice of upcoming carriageway surface treatment work on Chester Road as follows:
Cheshire Highways have arranged for A556 Chester Road to be closed for each night this week (13-17 May from 8pm to 6am) from the traffic lights at DeFine to the lights at the A49 so that much of the highway can be ripped up and relaid. The work has started, as can be seen from Monday's picture below.

Our Royalty have now been selected for Gala Day and are excited at the opportunity to meet everyone on the day.
Gala Queen, Emily Cawley, is 10 years old and likes to sing and dance. Her favourite subjects are English, art and drawing. She has a lazy cat called Ralph and 2 guinea pigs called Peach and Cherry. She chose their names while she was at the Fruit Selection Section at school dinners! She also likes going on walks in Cuddington and playing in the park with her friends.

Strikes:
Some disruption is expected between 29th April and 4 May due to action short of strike called by ASLEF, where some short notice amendments may take place.
In addition, train drivers at 16 rail companies across the UK will stage a series of strikes this month in their long-running pay dispute, the Aslef union has announced. The drivers will walk out on varying days from Tuesday 7 May until Thursday 9 May; overtime will also be banned for six days from Monday 6 May.
Members at LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express will strike on Thursday 9 May.
Before that, on Tuesday 7 May drivers will walk out at c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway. The following day, on 8 May, there will be strikes at Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

A full programme of Music Trains for 2024
We will have a full programme of Music Trains from April to October this year, starting on Wednesday 10 April. There will be monthly Music Trains from Chester to the Golden Pheasant in Plumley (except in June when we go to the Angel in Knutsford) and three more from Altrincham to Alexander’s in Chester. Plus we hope to have one or two from Altrincham to our new venue – the Goshawk in Mouldsworth. We are arranging a lunchtime Music Train for a group from Chester to the Railway Inn in Mobberley, another lunchtime event for a group from Chester to the Golden Pheasant and an evening Music Train for a group from Altrincham to Alexander’s.

How it works
There is no charge for the Music Trains from Chester to Plumley or Knutsford, though there is a collection on the way back for the band and you will need a train ticket. There is music on the train both ways and at the pub. No need to book from Chester or intermediate stations – just get on the train. There will be signs on the windows to show you the carriage with the music. Music Trains from Chester leave Chester at 18:56 and the return train arrives back in Chester at 22:38. You can also get on or off the train at the intermediate stations along the way. For Music Trains from Altrincham to Chester you need to book in advance – more details and train times in the next newsletter.
At the intermediate stations you must buy your ticket from the platform ticket machine or online. At Chester you can buy it from the ticket machine or the ticket office or online. If there isn’t a ticket machine at your station or if the machine isn’t working then you can buy a ticket from the conductor on the train.
It is always possible that train times might change and a small possibility that a Music Train might have to be cancelled at short notice. In that case you would receive an email notification if you are on this mailing list and a note would be put on the Community Rail Partnership website and its social media accounts.
Wednesday 22 May – Cuddington (19:18 train) to Plumley and at the Golden Pheasant
The Epicures are playing and singing on the Music Train from Chester and at the Golden Pheasant pub in Plumley.
The Golden Pheasant has an extensive menu which you can see online. You can order online in advance or when you arrive. If you order in advance then tell them that you are with the Music Train, so that you are seated in the bar area where you can hear the music and not in the restaurant.

You may be aware that 1st and 2nd Class stamps have risen in price from 2 April by ~13.5% (1st is now £1.35 and 2nd £0.85).
What you may not be aware of is that late collections (after 4.30pm) have been removed from all but the Mere Lane postbox and the Post Office. There used to be late collections from postboxes at Delamere Pk, Cuddington Lane, Bryn (A49), Littledales Lane (top), Hogshead Lane, Bag Lane/Wood's Lane, and Onston Lane. That's progress!
Last Saturday evening (30 March) evidently "sounded like a scene from Apocalypse Now" with the police helicopter circling Cuddington station area as well as a police drone search team having been deployed. Children had been spotted playing on the tracks! Rail services were suspended for a time.

Several services in and around Northwich are going to experience some changes. Both the 49 and 82 operated by D&G will have new timetables come April 1.
The 49 is being increased to a half-hourly service while the 82 will have an additional Saturday evening journey added, at 6.45pm from Chester to Northwich.
All of the new additions have been funded through Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Bus Service Improvement Plan.
Leaflets with details of the new timetables will be available on-bus, at local libraries and visitor centres - the new timetables will be shown on our website too.

Full House and friends are playing and singing on the Music Train from Chester and at the Golden Pheasant pub in Plumley. They are promoting Chester Folk Festival (www.chesterfolk.org.uk), to be held at Kelsall from Friday 24 May to Monday 27 May. Full House play songs and tunes, ancient and modern, from the Cheshire plains and beyond - a mixture of traditional, contemporary and self-written material on guitar, violin, flute and octave mandola.

The Ark café has opened for the first time this year, with villagers flocking there to enjoy the new Spring menu.
The community café, based at St John’s Church Hall on Norley Road, opens on Fridays for most of the year apart from January and Good Friday. The facility serves food from 9am-2pm (10-2 during school holidays) – starting with breakfast, and then lunch. A range of homemade cakes are available throughout the day, as well as hot and cold drinks.
To get your mouth watering, prices include £3.50 for a Littlers Bacon Bap, £1.50 for two buttered crumpets, £5 for a sandwich including side salad, coleslaw, and crisps, and £1.50 - £3 for cakes. Fresh ground coffee is £2, a pot of tea £1.50, and Hotel Chocolat Hot Chocolate £2.
Profits raised during the year go to support the community.
Team Leader, Kathryn Holmes, says: ‘The £3000 we raised this last year is being split between several good causes. These include St Luke’s Hospice for a specialist wheelchair, the Parent Teacher Associations at the two village Primary Schools, the Rainbows group, and a contribution to the extension of the footpath on the British Legion corner.’ During the school summer and Easter holidays, the café also provides a number of free lunches at Sandiway Library on a first-come-first-served basis (Fridays 11.30am – 12.30pm).
Now into its 9th year, The Ark is run by 20 volunteers who take on a variety of roles, on a rota basis. If you have some time to spare and want to help, you’re invited to pop in and have a chat to one of the team members.

"Garden waste collection is an opt-in chargeable service costing £50 per bin per calendar year regardless of when you subscribe during the year. This charge is not included or added to your council tax bill. Residents have a choice to use the service or make alternative arrangements such as composting at home or taking their waste to the nearest recycling centre. The best time to sign up for the service is before the end of January to benefit from all 20 collections during the calendar year.
The service will provide fortnightly collections over 40 weeks of the year with a suspension outside of growing season of 12 weeks (December to February). Garden waste bins will not be emptied without a valid subscription and displayed permit. Collections in 2024 will take place between Monday 26 February 2024 and Friday 29 November 2024."

Pete Waterman OBE and his 'Merry Railnuts' team are making a Christmas Hit for all the family during this year's festive season at Blakemere Village.
They are setting up their award winning “Making Tracks III” 64ft long model railway that will include interactive elements for children and adults with a few hidden surprises! Following its recent success at Chester Cathedral, Pete Waterman and the Railnuts team will be bringing their layout to Cheshire Outdoors at Blakemere Village hosted by Magical Wonderland at Christmas.
This incedible 64ft long model railway, which first appeared at Chester Cathedral between July and September 2023, will be in full festive style to be enjoyed by the entire family. The model railway features Milton Keynes Railway station – a modern image model layout with some very special never before seen features and trains.
