THE NOTABLES OF CUDDINGTON SANDIWAY AND DELAMERE PARK

Author: Jill E King  Publisher: C.C. Publishing (Chester) ISBN: 978-0-949001-57-3 PRICE (UK) £15.00

Question:  Which Olympic athletes have a 'strong' association with our village?

Answer:
The first is Shirley Strong, the Cuddington girl who won a silver medal for Great Britain in the 100 metre hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, missing out on Gold by 0.04 seconds; born on Grange Road, Cuddington, she remained in the village throughout her athletic career.

The second is Andy Carter who represented Great Britain in the 800 metres final at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Andy won the AAA title in 1970, 1972 and 1973 and held the British 800 metres record for many years before Seb Coe came along.  A local informant tells us that Andy is proud to be a member, with his son Tom, of a rather elite club: both father and son are sub-4-minute-milers! ( PRESS HERE for more on this tremendous achievement )
Andy lives on Delamere Park.

Much more about this and many other 'notables' in the book.....

FOUR LIVES - Pioneer, Slave Owner, Poet, Schoolteacher

'Four Lives' by Jill E King - C.C.Publishing(Chester) ISBN: 978-0-949001 priced £9.95.

This month, March 2020, sees the publication of the fifth book by local writer and historian Jill King.

Each of the lives has strong connections to Cuddington, Sandiway and its environs and all with a very different story to tell.

In 1854 farm labourer, William Curwell, made the hazardous journey across the Atlantic to seek a better life and on his death in 1902 his impoverished family back home were to receive an unexpected windfall.

Attorney, Conrade Coulthurst, suddenly found himself the owner of 151 slaves on the island of Barbados. The Coulthurst family resided at Sandiway Cottage and are remembered at Whitegate Church on memorials inside and several impressive gravestones outside,

Young and talented poet, Joseph Humphreys, drew much of his inspiration from the landscape around 'Old Cuddington'.

120 years ago, schoolmistress, Catherine Anna Drowley, taught at Sandiway School for 35 years influencing the lives of a generation of local children but her life knew more than its fair share of personal tragedy.

OUR SACRIFICE

THE 32 MEN OF CUDDINGTON AND SANDIWAY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE AND WORLD WAR TWO

Author: Jill E King Publisher: C.C. Publishing (Chester) ISBN: 978-0-949001-63-4 PRICE (UK) £15.00

Cuddington resident Jill King is looking forward to the publication of her new book this month (September 2018).

This latest, thoroughly researched book from local historian, Jill King, documents the lives of the 32 servicemen whose names are listed on the brass memorial plaque in St. John's Church, Sandiway. Jill felt that for too long the inscriptions had been merely a list of names and after all they and their kinsfolk endured, it hardly seemed enough.

It is learnt where those who fell lived and worked, about their families and the anguish their loss caused. There are poignant anecdotes from family and friends and details of each casualties service, when and how they came to lose their lives and where they are remembered. There is a moving story behind each and every one of these brave young men.

'Our Sacrifice' will have a very limited print run so if you want to be really sure of a copy you can reserve one either

The 120+ A4 good quality paper pages include 217 illustrations in both black and white, and colour. These include original documents, newspaper cuttings and letters from the time as well as many old images of our village and treasured family photographs.
